The Power of Meaningful Relationships – My Monthly Postcard – November

Effective communication is essential to maintaining relationships. We often think of communication as the verbal or written words that we express to others. However, there are so many others ways in which we communicate to those around us. Our nonverbal behavior, our silence, our presence or absence. We communicate through music, drawings, images, dance, and all other art forms. The assumptions that we make are also forms of communication. I invite all of you join in on the challenge that I present to my best friend this month – push the boundaries of how you define communication and communicate your thoughts, love, feelings, ideas, gratitude, etc. with others in your life.

“The 1st week of November is World Communication Week. Our communication with each other is one of the most powerful tools that we possess. As you read through this postcard, take in each suggestion and recognize how they represent different forms of communication. This month, I challenge you to communicate. Push the boundaries of how you define communication and find little moments to communicate your thoughts, love, feelings, ideas, gratitude, etc. with others in your life.”

The Power of Meaningful Relationships – My Monthly Postcard – October

October is one of my favorite months because, in central NY, it holds and embraces my favorite season – autumn. With this excitement that I feel as we move into October, there are so many words that I would love to share… So many encouragements I would love to give. In keeping with a theme that my best friend and I both hold close to our hearts, it felt appropriate to encourage her (as well as all of you) to explore art and all of the possibility that this can mean.

“October officially means that it’s autumn… apples, falling leaves, pumpkins, and Halloween. One of my favorite things about Halloween was the creativity spent designing costumes. I loved the construction put into my own, and I also appreciated seeing others’ inventions. I’ve always seen it as a form of art. Last month, I invited you to foster your creativity. Now, I encourage you to take it one step further and explore art. Create it, view it, visit it, seek it out, find it in hidden places.”

The Power of Meaningful Relationships – My Monthly Postcard – September

Although it may not appear as such, this month’s postcard is a little more personal to both my best friend and to me. Therefore, it was somewhat of a struggle to write and even more difficult to share. And, I recognize the value and power of sharing our words with others. So, I continue to commit to sharing mine with all of you.

“This is the time of year when children, and even some adults, are headed to school – A place where we can gain knowledge and cultivate our thinking. As children, we are eager to learn and to expand our minds. This best develops when an adult literally gets down on the floor with us to play and encourage our imagination. So, I invite you to take moments to foster your childlike creativity. Let it flourish. Let it inspire you.”

The Power of Meaningful Relationships – My Monthly Postcard – August

As we grow and our lives develop, our relationships also tend to shift and change. I see great value in working to maintain significant relationships in my life – even if the important people in my life live far away from me. The inventions of technology allow me to stay connected with friends across the globe with a simple click of a button. However, I also enjoy reverting back to an earlier time and utilizing snail mail. Because, who doesn’t love opening their mailbox and finding a small gift from someone they love? So, I send one of my best friends a postcard every month to inspire, support, and challenge her. Below, I also share the postcard with all of you.

As you prepare for your move to a new city this month, allow yourself to say good-bye to the 1st place where you created a home just for you. Say your farewells to your community & all that it offered you. Then, embark on your voyage toward your new life & new home. Once there, let yourself explore. Build community for yourself. Throughout this journey, give yourself permission to struggle. Remember that it’s supposed to be difficult.

The Power of Meaningful Relationships – My Monthly Postcard – July

Last month, I started sharing my monthly postcard that I send to my best friend. This month, I continue to invite you into one of the ways that I provide support to my friend and maintain our relationship across state lines.

Independence Day and the celebrations that will ensue start our month. Often, when the 4th is mentioned, we think of fireworks, picnics, a day off from work, and (maybe) freedom. Celebrating our independence can be empowering. And, acknowledging and speaking our truths about where our world is still lacking in providing freedom to be our authentic selves can be incredibly valuable. So, acknowledge. Speak your truth. And, hear others when they speak theirs.

The Power of Meaningful Connection – My Monthly Postcard – June

There is such power in meaningful relationships. When we find those individuals who we choose to invite into our lives, we can receive encouragement, challenge, support, laughter, and so much more. This is where my story begins.

My best friend and I have been friends for 15 years. We attended high school and college together. However, since college, we have lived hours away from each other. Therefore, our relationship has mostly been maintained through the use of technology. We have been there for each other through celebrations and sorrows. Last year, my friend was experiencing a significantly difficult life event. So, I decided to create a way to both support and challenge her through her healing process. Each month I send her a postcard. Something simple. Yet, something that holds so much meaning.

I would like share my monthly postcard with you. With this, I hope to encourage you to take in the words that I share with my best friend and allow them to form meaning for yourself. I also invite you to find ways of connecting with those individuals in your own life. Allow yourself to be creative.

June holds the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year and the official acknowledgement of summer’s arrival. The Solstice is observed by many in a variety of ways. Celebrations may be anything from a small bonfire throughout the night to thousands who gather for a festival that engulfs a city. For me, as you know, my tradition is to attend Pie Festival. As the Solstice nears, decide how you would like to honor the cycles of nature and welcome summer. Allow your mind to create any possibility. Then, take action. Truly celebrate.
